AN increased potential for vineyard diseases and uncertainty surrounding prices are among the issues facing Riverland wine grape growers ahead of the coming vintage. 

In the CCW January 2023 vintage update – provided anonymously to The Murray Pioneer newspaper – CEO Jim Godden says recent wet conditions have increased the risk of diseases such as powdery mildew.  

“The La Nina weather pattern and corresponding impacts in the vineyard have meant most people have had to keep up a high level of disease management,” Mr Godden says in the update. 

“Spray, spray and more spray, seems to be the mantra for this season.

“We have maintained constant contact with Accolade Wines throughout this time to facilitate, where possible, the review process of flagged patches. 

“The workload generated this year due to disease is significant against the technical resources available to both CCW and Accolade Wines.” 

Mr Godden also advised growers further meetings would be held with Accolade Wines to negotiate variety prices for the 2023 vintage. 

“While discussions have been conducted in good faith, unfortunately at this time, we have not reached agreement with Accolade Wines,” he said.  

“We believe it is in the best interest of the co-operative to continue discussions and negotiations.

“While we do not wish to prolong the negotiation period, our focus is on achieving the best outcome possible for members.”
