CONTINUED “innovative” industry approaches will see two local vineyards contend for a national award next year.
Riverland-based vineyards Markaranka, located near Taylorville, and Starrs Reach, at New Residence, were earlier this month named among 50 finalists for the Young Gun of Wine 2021 Vineyard of the Year Award.
Treasury Wine Estates viticulture manager Brendan Turner – who oversees the Markaranka vineyard – said a dedication to producing high-quality fruit was key to the nomination.
“We’ve got a few Portuguese varieties, and we grow predominantly for fortified wines in the Penfolds range,” Mr Turner said.
“We’re very happy with the nomination. We’re very excited to have been recognised among the top 50.
“We’re just looking to keep working hard in that market space, and to keep providing our loyal fortified drinkers with a great product.”
Awards panellist Dr Mary Retallack said the chosen finalists highlighted a growing commitment toward sustainable winemaking.
“This is our opportunity to celebrate the innovative and regenerative approaches being taken to produce exceptional grape quality, which is reflected in stunning wines while nurturing the soil, vines and landscapes with an ecological focus,” Dr Retallack said.
“It is possible to grow amazing quality fruit while nurturing the land, and they are mutually compatible processes.
“I was absolutely inspired by the holistic approach that winegrowers are taking to fully integrate their practices, nurture the soil, vines and surrounding ecology while minimising intervention.”
It is understood winners of the awards will be announced at the beginning of February.
