A PAIR of northern Mallee farmers, Leon and Troy Brun, took out this year’s Browns Well Crop Walk.

Five entries were included in the 2022 competition, which went ahead on Thursday, October 13, despite the day being plagued by a deluge of spring rain.

Organised by Lachie Singh and Jock McNeill, the competition required a few changes due to the wet weather.

“Usually we have our guest speakers at lunch time and at the end of the day, but we rejigged it,” Mr Singh said.

“We had our guest speakers first, then lunch at the football club, and even though it was still raining we headed off and had a look at a wheat trial, and then a look at the five wheat crops.

“The standard was very good, in comparison to last year.

“Because it was raining and no-one really wanted to walk around in the rain and in the wet crops we streamlined it this year – we were basically just targeting who everyone thought had the highest yield on the day.

“They were quite close but (Leon’s and Troy’s) had the edge on the rest of them.”

Mr Singh said the northern Mallee season was shaping up to be “excellent” despite the heavy rainfall.

Guest speakers on the day included Andrew Hannom from AusAgri, Brad Koster an AGT crop breeder, Jamie Wilson from Pioneer Seed, David Evans from Farmers Business Network and Mel Fraser from Soil Function Consulting.
